With reduced displacement, numerous innovations and twin turbochargers, the advanced 5.5-liter V-8 of the G63 AMG outputs a thunderous 536 hp @ 5,250-5,750 rpm and 560 lb-ft of torque. While it bears the signature of the single technician who lovingly assembled it by hand, it's a high-tech powerhouse. Its twin turbochargers spin up to 185,000 rpm to dramatically boost low-end torque. High-pressure Direct Injection microscopically fine-tunes the fuel spray while rapid-multispark ignition fires up to four times in a millisecond. Its 32 valves are driven by dual overhead camshafts that can precisely vary their timing by up to 40 degrees. Along with substantially improved efficiency and emissions, plus the everyday smoothness for which AMG engines are renowned, it also delivers 60 mph in a breathtaking 5.3 seconds.
The 7-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT transmission features exclusive AMG calibration and features to allow multiple degrees of driver involvement and response. Three driving modes can be selected via a console-mounted button: "Controlled Efficiency" features a fuel-saving ECO Start/Stop function. "Sport" mode raises the shift points to higher rpm. And a paddle-shifted "Manual" mode allows direct sequential gear selection. In any mode, downshifts are rev-matched with a brief "blip" of the throttle between gearchanges, for smoother engagement and more immediate power delivery upon acceleration.
